Harvard Square in Cambridge may have the original House of Blues. But in Portsmouth, New Hampshire there's another spot that serves up authentic barbecue set to the music of B.B. King, Muddy Waters, and other blues greats. Owner Dan Posternak explains:

"I really liked the barbecue-blues combination. I thought it was a hot concept that was in the Midwest and down South, and I wanted to be the first to get it going up here."

And what he got going is the Muddy River Smokehouse: a spacious, comfortable barbecue and blues house that's no Yankee rip-off. Dan spend plenty of time studying the fine art of smoking, grilling, and saucing.

"So we took a lot of time in researching on the whole process of the rub and the smoking and the grilling and the barbecue so that it came out perfect every time."

And the meats do come out of this smoker perfect every time. They're smoked between four and twelve hours, tender and packed with flavor... then finished up on the grill, and smothered in their sweet barbecue sauce.

"Up here a lot of people are not the barbecue experts they are down South. We felt that people like a lot of sauce on their barbecue so we tried to perfect our sauce as well as the dry rub."

But for the most part, Muddy River stays true to its somewhat offensive motto: Southern Smokehouse Barbecue so authentic you'll get a notion to marry your sister."

Some of the Muddy River menu highlights are the ribs: available in tender babyback, meaty St. Louis, or massive beef varieties.

"It's a Texas rib. We like to call it the 'Fred Flintstone' or the Dinosaur rib 'cuz they're huge. You need two hands to hold that thing up."

But the most popular item is the pulled pork, which is slow smoked for 15 hours, shredded by hand, and mixed with the perfect sauce.

And it works well with a side or corn bread, cole slaw, mashed potatoes, baked beans, or maybe even the Deep Fried Pickles.

And whatever you order... don't even bother with a knife and fork.

"You'll need lots of napkins. A lot of wet naps. We have paper towels on the tables. And we go through a lot of wet naps and bibs. But people know when they get in here. They're gonna get messy. So I wouldn't recommend wearing a three piece suit in here."
